Thank you for writing Surviving Federal Prison. Our son became a federal prisoner last month at Ashland KY. I found your book informative and insightful. Your wit and style remind me of award winning author Jim Bouton of "Ball Four" fame.

Amazing book to read,  I was a Corrections Officer at the BOP for 14 years before I got in trouble.  Its hard for me to believe that anyone can figure out what we really do and what we think.  You really understand how the BOP works

*  *  *  *  *  *

Another BOP Corrections Officer told me in his first letter he sent me after he got in:  Mark, I was ignorant with what goes on in here before.  I thought I had a clue, boy I was wrong.  ...  the info in your book is PRICELESS, if you need anything to help with updates, please let me know.      Pretty strong words coming from someone who worked in a Federal Prison as a Corrections Officer for 17 years.

I read most of your book before I got here but it was too upsetting to my stomach to sit down and see what you had to say.  You did an excellent job of explaining the happenings of life in prison.  It was like I wanted to know the inside workings but I was also scared to read the facts.  That part, the anticipation, is now behind me and it's just a matter of doing the time and getting out of here as fast as possible.

Your words and advice have been extremely useful to my father in his first few weeks in Camp.  Thank you very much, the whole family has read your book several times.

I just want to thank you for your prompt response. I love your honesty and everything you do for the federal inmates.You are an angel sent from heaven to defend our loved ones who can defend them self's. Again, Thank you very much. I greatly appreciate everything about you

Thank you so much for writing your books. You can't imagine how much they have helped me and my boyfriend.
I refer to them at least once a day to answer his questions as well as some of my own.
My only regret was not getting the books before he went in.

You have been the most informative person that I have talked to, even more so than our lawyer

*  *  *  *  *  *

My lawyer spent 20 minutes preparing me for prison.  That left me so messed up, I didn't know what to do.  I hate to admit it, but I bought another book on life in Federal Prison Camps.  That was a waste.  It made me think of way more questions than it answered.  I didn't really want to buy another one, but I'm glad I did.  Yours is great. I love the way it is laid out and I really needed to read the A&O Book at the end.  It was a real deal.

I really just want to say WOW and thanks for putting together this book.  You have a lot of good inside info people just don't know about.

You are my hero

Thank God for Mark Hrutkay

I bought all the prison books there were.  I read some, my son read some.
He read your book and said "Dad, I think we found it".   It is simply amazing.

Read your book...Interesting to say the least!! Very helpul.

I do not know if you remember me but I met you  ... just before I went away on my "federal vacation" for a year.   ...  I must tell you that I was pretty shut down emotionally before I left and I couldn't wrap my arms around your writings at the time.  Well, little did I know how very honest and "right on" you were.  I've been home a couple months now and I just re-read it.  I hope you did write the book and I truly hope you can get it in the hands of the people who are about to endure prison.  I could go on a soap box about the craziness and injustices that I witnessed at the camp but I will save that for now.  Your writings are so different than the Novack & Ellis books.  They were so politically correct but with not a sense of reality.  You nailed it!!

I must say that I smiled and laughed at times reading it now and realizing that you will never really know what it's like inside unless you've been there.  I am back to life with a new appreciation and a sense of gratitude.  I certainly would not advise anyone to have our experience in federal prison but I would wish the clarity I have today on everyone around me.

I want to thank you.  You cover things so well, and with the details that people like myself would never think of - innocent things that can be taken the wrong way, and I think to realize that no one is your "friend" is a good one.

I just wanted to let you know, I just received the book, I'm only on page 11 and am absolutely amazed!!

Wow! You just gave me more info than I've been able to find with 100 hours of web searches, blogs, etc.
Thank you so much!!
(That was based on an Email I sent answering a few simple questiions, then she bought the book too; THANK YOU!!)

Well, I guess it finally happened, someone at the Bureau of Prisons Central Office has read at least some of my book.
Wow, the impression I got was that they didn't like it.
As much as they didn't like it, they didn't really say there was much wrong with it.
It did affirm one of my theories that they don't get out of the office to see how the prisons are run very often.
If they don't like it, then all I can say is I must have done something right.

After I paid my lawyer, I was broke, I scraped up the money and bought your book.  It made  me feel a lot better than the lawyer ever did.  I even think that it was worth more than the $35,000 I paid him.  At least I feel like I really understand something about what is going to happen now.  God Bless you!!!

is book, wish so much I had had it a year and a half ago...my life fell apart, as his did.  Thank you and I wish you all the luck with this great book.

Thank you, Mark.  My son will be sentenced soon.  It's wonderful to know that we have a source of knowledge.

*  *  *  *  *  *

And you are 100% right...no one even knows about what questions they should ask...all they ask about is GTC & Halfway houses...because no one thinks about the time inbetween the stay...they only think of getting sentenced and getting out.

You've got the ONLY real-deal, modern "handbook" on Federal prisons...

  My days and hours are limited before I have to self surrender …  I feel so alone with all of this at times and every now and then a ray of sunshine, like yourself, pops through.

 *  *  *  *  *  *

   I’ve read through it a couple of times and find the information very good and written in a way to give specific information and at times to make it light.  I can feel some anger in your writing and that’s probably because of my own anger towards the government and its injustice.
